Christie's tasting
Christie's pre-auctin dinner at the Hong Kong Club.
Jacquesson Cuvée N°748, dégorgée en Mars 2025 - this was actually very floral and elegant, with a nice little yeasty nose.
First flight:
2010 Chapoutier Ermitage Le Méal Blanc - the nose was waxy, very ripe and definitely on the bitter side. This was more expressive and open on the nose, more opulent, but the palate was kinda boring.
2016 Chave Hermitage Blanc - there was also some bitterness on the palate, but the nose was much more fresh, with flinty and citrus notes, but leaner on the nose. More than 2½ hours after opening, the nose was becoming buttery.
Second flight:
1989 La Mission Haut-Brion - this was so, soooo beautiful! Big nose of tobacco, smoke, nice fruit but so elegant, so fragrant. Plummy on the nose but without the cooked fruit or the acidity on the palate. This was still so lively at its age, showing the beauty of the vintage. What a stunning wine, and certainly my favorite tonight.
1982 Léoville-Las Cases - this was clearly more mature, more ripe on the nose with sweeter fruit. This was so interesting, and we've got green capsicum... which wasn't a surprise. The wine was silky smooth on the palate, but the finish wasn't very long. The nose also showed some smoke and grilled meats, and 2½ hours after opening, the nose got even more smoky.
2001 Dominus - pretty minty, and very much sweeter on the palate.
Third flight:
2015 Chave Hermitage Rouge - this was still very young, and still showing lots of metallic and iron notes on the nose, and also very sweet. Then it became a bit grassy on the nose, and of course it was still kinda tannic on the palate.
1995 Chave Hermitage Rouge - this was sooooo nice, so beautiful. with classic notes of bacon and game meat. On the palate this was so fragrant and complex, with potpourri and herbs. Surprisingly, more than 3 hours after opening this kinda fell off a cliff.
2015 Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque - this was much riper compared to the Chave, very sweet, with big nose of potpourri and herbs. Kinda hot and alcoholic on the palate. This became so, so nice after more than 2 hours as coffee and caramel notes developed.
Fourth flight:
2001 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin - this was really nice and open, especially as it was sweeter on the nose than expected, and there was that bacon... So fragrant but still had the signature barnyard notes, although not strong and offensive, and definitely got a little brett. Still so nice, though.
2003 Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul - this was definitely overripe, and started to remind me of cough syrup with its alcoholic profile, and stewed prunes on the palate. Really, really sweet and jammy.
1990 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin - this was such a big wine with that signature barnyard nose, soooo bretty, and pretty savory. Not my thing.
Fifth flight:
2007 Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne - kinda fragrant and woodsy, pretty fragrant, minty, with lots of dried herbs.
2004 Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Cà d'Morissio Riserva - there was still a little hint of sharpness on the nose. Weakest of the trio in this lineup.
2003 Gaja Barbaresco - nice and fragrant. OK lah...

1989 La Lagune
Drinking at home.
1989 La Lagune - started drinking right after decanting. This wine was mature, showing slightly stewed fruit on the nose, smoky and also bretty, with lots of tertiary notes. Savory, almost soy sauce-like. With the second pour about an hour in, the fragrant cedar notes were released and the wine became more pleasurable.

Egon Múller dinner
Dinner at Palco with wines from Egon Müller, organized by ORD Fine Wines.
2021 Château Belá Štúrovo Riesling - nice, classic nose of petrol and white truffle. A little sweetish on the palate but still got the acidity.
2023 Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett - classic nose with polyurethane and white flowers, a hint of honey, and more elegant. Good acidity on the palate making it more crisp, but also a little more grippy.
2022 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett - this was bigger on the nose, with more flint and petrol. So fragrant and lovely.
2023 Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese - very nice, sweeter on the palate than the kabinett, of course... with some acidity for balance.
2022 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese - this was sooo floral, soooo alluring. Pretty sweet on the palate now. These days auslese are made with 100% botrytis grapes thanks to climate change.
2019 Château Belá Rulanské Modré - the nose was sooooo sugary, and actually a bit sharp and definitely a bit overripe and oxidized. Not great.
2017 Château Belá Cabernet Sauvignon - minty and fragrant nose, with a little bit of pepper and nice fruit that was kinda ripe.
1989 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Beerenauslese - honey and marmalade notes on the nose. Nice and viscous on the palate, but this was kinda weak mid-palate. The finish was long and nice.

Chinese wines with Sichuanese food
Dinner at Chef 1996 Restaurant in Beijing.
2022 Petit Mont Baima Snow Mountain Yanjing (寸山白马雪山盐井) - OK la... this opened up after a while, showing some nice fruit, some forest notes, and maybe even a hint of coffee later.
2024 The Four Girls Mountain Chardonnay Selection (四姑娘山霞多丽臻選) - lots of vanilla and oak on the nose, along with flint and stone fruits. A little sharp and alcoholic on the nose. Got decent acidity on the palate.
1996 Wuliangye (五粮液) - very smooth on the palate. Still got that classic baijiu profile on the nose.
89 Lang Jiu (郎酒) - there was more umami on the palate, more like Shaoxing, with plummy and fermented flavors.
2023 Clos Mao Shuó Lin (说林) - definitely more rustic on the nose, reflecting the cabernet franc. Still very tannic on the palate.
2018 Célèbre Red (寶莊) - tons of vanilla oak on the nose, ripe and jammy.
2020 Lapu Valley Vidal Golden Ice Wine (藏云谷威代尔冰酒) - very floral with lots of honey.

Keller and Le Gallais
Dinner at Gem Garden in Shenzhen.
1989 Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese - decanted before serving. Big nose of white flowers, white truffle, orange blossom water, marmalade, and honey.
2020 Keller Dalsheim Bürgel Spätburgunder Trocken Großes Gewächs - decanted before serving. First whiff showed strawberries and eucalyptus. About 45 minutes later the wine got softer on the palate. The fragrance was nicer after almost 1½ hours, showing more leather.
Bought from Hong Kong Wine Vault for HKD 1,150.

2020 Angelus and Ygrec
Dinner at Caprice.
2020 Ygrec de Yquem - nose of lemon citrus, honey, with very good acidity to balance the small amount of ripeness on the palate. I could definitely smell the sauvignon blanc in the blend.
Bought from HK Wine Vault for HKD 1,300.
2020 Angelus - drank about 2 hours after decanting. Definitely still a very young and vibrant wine. Very ripe and a little jammy, with prominent notes of forest and potpourri, along with vanilla and mint on the nose. Still needs time to develop, but enjoyable now.
Bought from Altaya for EUR 295.
2014 Yauem, en imperial - lots of polyurethane and saffron, as well as orange and acetone. Soooo lovely and viscous on the palate.
2020 DRC Corton-Charlemagne - good acidity as well as good ripeness, with a little honey on the nose and a bit of polyurethane. This did not smell like a white Burg at all, with none of the buttery and oaky profile. After a little more time, the toasty notes finally came out, along with some flint. When the wine got warmer in the glass, the ripeness became more obvious.
1989 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl Sélection de Grains Nobles - nose of saffron, honey, marmalade, and lovely nutty notes.

89 Cos
Drinking at home.
1989 Cos d'Estournel - started drinking 30 minutes after decanting. Very silky smooth on the palate. Smoky nose with some cassis, a bit of leather, some grilled meats, a little wood, and a really nice fragrance. Still got the silky tannins on the finish. A little sharp on the nose after 1 hour, but w hours after decanting this was more elegant and rounded on the nose. Started to get minty some 2½ hours after decanting, with a slight hint of green capsicums. After 3½ hours we've got some fragrant, toasty coffee coming out. Drinking so well right now.
Bought from HK Wine Vault for HKD 2,000.

Chave and Stephan
Lunch at Flower Drum.
1989 Maximin Grünhaüser Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese - right away we have nose of white flowers. The palate was initially soft and gentle, but with good amount of acidity on the back. There was also a little bit of caramelized sugar as the wine opened up. Delicious.
Bought from Mayfair as part of a mixed lot for HKD 316.
2008 Jean-Michel Stephan Côte-Rôtie - decanted 30 minutes after opening and started drinking 45 minutes after opening. On the nose there were some sweet fruits, a bit of leather, with a lovely floral nose showing violets. The nose was almost Burgundian and alluring. Around 1½ hours after opening, the wine was drinking really nicely.
Bought from Midfield for HKD 850.
2013 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage - decanted around 2 hours after opening and started drinking around 2½ hours after opening. This was a much bigger wine, with much more concentration. Notes of grilled meats, and definitely a little bretty. Showing earthy notes some 3½ hours after opening.
2020 Marthe Henry Boillot Bourgogne Aligoté - toasty notes on the nose. Definitely tart and grippy on the palate, with acidity on the high side but not too sharp. Definitely an aligoté.
